Skylights installed as part of a sound roof
A skylight is a hole in your roof, so it has to be installed and flashed like part of the roofing system. Because we're roofers first, that's exactly how we treat it.

Signs to watch for
When it's time to call about skylight installation
- Moisture or stains around an existing skylight. The seal or flashing has likely failed.
- Cracked or cloudy glass. Damaged units let in water and heat.
- An aging skylight on a roof that's being replaced. The best time to replace it is with the roof.
- A dark room you wish had more light. A new skylight can change how a room feels.

More windows & skylights questions →Does moisture around a skylight mean I need a new skylight?
Not always. The moisture can come from the unit itself, the flashing around it or another roof opening nearby. During roofing work, the skylight’s age and condition also matter, because replacing it at the same time can be the better long-term choice.
Do skylights always leak eventually?
No. Most skylight leaks come from failed flashing or seals, not the skylight itself. A properly flashed skylight in good condition should keep water out.
Can a leaking skylight be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes. If the unit is in good shape and the flashing is the problem, a repair may be enough. Older or damaged units are usually better replaced.
